One of the best students I ever had working for me was Rich Swingley. Very talented and a very hard worker. He came to me one day and said he’d hurt his back. It seems he’d been told by Earl to go to Earl’s home and bring back some equipment—belonging to Ball State—that was in his garage. While lifting some of it, he’d hurt his back. Rich said he was going to the Student Health Center and asked me what he should tell them when they ask him how the injury happened. I told him in no uncertain terms that he tell them exactly how it happened. There was no way he should cover for Earl.
