Who, me? Stubborn?

I was an RA (resident assistant) in a dorm for one year at Ohio University.  The reason is explained in Change of Direction.  There were eight of us, plus the RD (resident director).  There was a schedule of when we had a shift in the evenings to make rounds and be on-call.  This also included weekends, which we rotated.  After a few weeks I discovered that I worked more weekends than others.  In fact, the RA’s who like to party were the ones who had fewer weekend shifts.  That didn’t seem quite fair to me.  Especially, since no one had asked me if that schedule was OK with me.

At our next weekly meeting with our RD, I brought this up.  The RA’s who liked to party said that since I had a lighter class load and didn’t really like to party, the schedule made sense.  (Yeah, right.)  My argument was that we all have the same job description and get paid the same for the same work.  Plus, no one asked me about doing this.  I would have considered it, but not now.  The schedule should be made fairly.  I turned and gestured to the RD.  After a pause, she said the schedule must be equitable for everyone.  Changes must be approved by both parties.  I lost a couple of “sort of” friends, but hopefully they learned a lesson.
