Learning discipline

Harry Houska had been a champion wrestler and was now the coach of the OU wrestling team. Like most college coaches, his income was supplemented by hosting camps for high school athletes in his sport.

One summer we were managing the dorm for a wrestling camp.  When high school kids are away from home—and parents—lots of rambunctious behavior often occurs—regardless whether it’s wrestlers, bell ringers, band, choir, etc.  But this group of wrestlers was especially out of control.  Harry Houska was a no-nonsense guy and believed in discipline. That’s one reason his team was always one of the best in the NCAA.

We mentioned to Harry about the problems we were encountering.  So Harry came by one evening to check on things.  When he saw what was going on, he grabbed one of the kids and took him outside in front of the dorm so everyone could watch.  With Harry standing over him, the high school wrestler did 100 push-ups.  (A couple of times the push-ups weren’t quite up to par so Harry made him start over.)  We didn’t have any problems the rest of the week.
