Rockin’ Riverfront

When the National League consisted of two divisions, the Reds and Dodgers were big rivals. It was 1975 and the Big Red Machine was hosting the Dodgers at Riverfront.  It was a packed house on a hot July Sunday.  The Reds were protecting a slim lead in the middle of the game with Steve Yeager, the Dodgers’ catcher, at bat with two on and two out.  Pete Rose was playing third, with the Dodgers dugout on the third base side.

During the at-bat, some of the Dodgers started jawing with Rose.  Finally, Rose doesn’t like what he hears and takes a few steps towards the Dodgers’ dugout.  The umpires quickly get between them and get everyone back to where they’re supposed to be.  But the crowd is now really revved up.  The next pitch—the very next pitch—Yeager hits a low liner in the hole between third and short.  Rose takes a step to his left and dives—and snags the ball out of the air.  Rose hits the Astroturf and bounces up.  He turns and looks at the Dodgers’ dugout, takes the ball out of his glove, and spikes it as hard as he can.  Riverfront was shaking!!!
