My alcoholic, embezzler boss – Part 2

Categories:

I was in the process of hiring a producer/director.  My top candidate was Sandra Lundgren.  If hired, this would be a big deal.  She would be the first woman hired for either the Production or Engineering departments in Media Services.  Part of the interview process involved having them meet with Earl. So, I took her into his office and stayed with her.

Earl was never a great conversationalist; and he had a hard time dealing with women.  (Though, I later found out he had a girlfriend.)  Out of his mouth came, “We get the people no one else wants.  We just hire’em and fire’em.  Hire’em and fire’em.”  Needless to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed. I think Sandra was shocked.

As soon as we left, I said to her, “Ignore him.  You’d be reporting to me.  Don’t pay any attention to him.”  I offered her the job and she accepted.
