Jay Gardner was the first player I ever drafted. A really good kid, and a good shortstop and pitcher. In what would be his last game for me, he came to me before the game and asked, if he gave up four hits or less, could keep his uniform. I don’t recall who we were playing but I felt it was a good bet to make with him. (Of course, I’d love it if he allowed no more than four hits.) On the other hand, uniforms weren’t really something I could be giving away. Though, I felt pretty safe. Wouldn’t you know it! Jay allows only 3 three hits—and gets his uniform.
