Dean of Central Ohio Sportscasters

My grandmother, my dad’s mother, lived in tiny house perched on the side of the hill on Union Street. I would often spend evenings there, playing rummy with her and Pete, who rented a room from her.  When the news would come on, we’d watch channel 4, WLWC out of Columbus, and, in particular, watch Jimmy Crum do the sports report.  My grandmother would always remark with pride that he had rented a room from her when he was a student at OU. Jimmy Crum became the “Dean of Central Ohio Sportscasters”.  He worked for WLWC, later WCMH, the NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio for decades.  He also raised a lot of money for charity.

Dale actually met Jimmy Crum years later—but didn’t know it.  She was working for the Jewish Community Center in Columbus at the time.  One evening she attended a benefit dinner for the JCC.  Sitting beside her was a guy wearing a garish plaid jacket.  After she came home, she was telling me about the dinner and mentioned the plaid jacket. I said, “You were sitting beside Jimmy Crum!”  (He always wore loud jackets.)  Then I described what he looked like, and she said, “Yeah, that was him.”  I would have loved an autograph!
