As a text-based alternative to auditory information, captions can make the content equally accessible and multilingual subtitles can promote a cross-linguistic understanding of the content. Live captions and multilingual subtitles can be generated by a human or with automatic speech recognition technology. In this session, we discuss findings and themes that emerged from our study that explored students’ experiences when using real-time automated captions/subtitles during live online class presentations. Session attendees will experience subtitles with PowerPoint Live, discuss challenges and opportunities when offering automated captions/subtitles as text-based alternative to live speech, and share ideas for practice and research.
