Collaborative learning experiences can enhance student understanding and foster creativity; however, online asynchronous learning spaces present unique challenges for those experiences, which by design can encourage student isolation in the learning process. Despite the challenges, successful collaborative activities in an online asynchronous course are possible. This session will focus on three main areas important to student success: the learning environment, incremental collaborative opportunities, and designing effective team tasks.

Tanya Allen is the Assistant Professor of Music Education at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX.  She has presented sessions on creating collaborative learning opportunities in the asynchronous online space and open educational resources for music faculty.
